Best Ways To Make Backups Of Your Windows Registry

February 24, 2010 by

The windows registry basically stores in it information’s about your computer’s configuration. It is usually a huge database containing records about your computer. Each and every hardware and software settings and configurations are stored in this registry. With continuous usage over time your computer gets cluttered up with these registries. Time to time you need to clean this registry up to avoid slow performance of your personal computer. A new computer doesn’t need to fix this.

The main reason why the windows registry grows into size is accumulation of hardware and software settings and configurations, while uninstalling software many times it doesn’t uninstall completely and the entries remain hence clogging up disk space of your personal computer. Many of these data are unreadable and obsolete and simply needs to be deleted to ensure faster performance for your machine.
One must however take care while taking a backup of the windows registry periodically to avoid loss of data and settings. The ways to take the backup of file informations are given as under :-

To backup your registry in windows XP/2000, click on ‘start’, click on ‘run’ and type in ‘regedit’. The windows registry will open. Then click on ‘File’ and select ‘Export’. Another windows will open and you can specify the name and the location to save the registry.

Please take care of two mostly important issues:-

Make sure the file type is set to ‘Registration Files (*.reg)’. You do not want to want to save as txt as you will not be able to import the registry file in the event that your windows registry is corrupted.

The second point is to click on the radio button ‘All’ in the export range options at the bottom of the windows. You want to backup the entire registry file, not just part of it.
One can also take backup of the registry file to another computer or to a diskette or CD. Sometimes when the windows registry is corrupted, you may not be able to boot into windows at all.

I have recently done the exact thing you are talking about — moving files from an old 98 to a new Vista. I installed the programs on the new computer, then used a USB flash stick 2 gig) to copy the old files onto and then download into the correct files on the new one. I transferred 10 years worth in less than an hour. The only mistake I made can be avoided. I bought a USB flash stick that wasn't compatible with Windows 98, so I ended up having to buy a 2nd one. You can get them cheap on eBay. Email me if you get stuck!

I am assuming you have windows vista? If this is the case yes you can there will be an option in the info tab of itunes to let you select which program(Outlook, windows contacts, yahoo address book, or google contacts) you want to sync with.
