Gamsol is mineral spirits. Minerals spirits used as a diluent on the first layers of a painting is generally considered acceptable, keeping in mind that Gamsol is not a drying oil. Thus, evaporation is extremely important to avoid the damar problem (clouding) you mention. Personally, I don't use it.
There is also a big problem using mineral spirits on top of damar. Since mineral spirits dilutes the paint film, the top layer will be more brittle than the damar layer. The obvious result is cracking. It violates the “fat over lean” rule.
