Ever since the American economy bit the dust a year ago, the skiing industry has been trying to recover its footing. So far, the advance bookings indicate that this year will be a bit better. Even so, the majority of ski resorts are not content to do nothing. Instead, many resorts are beginning to offer great deals to entice skiers and snowboarders to their site. Past and potential customers are being enticed with special discount ski holiday offers, super weekend offers, and special week long ski lift deals.
For instance, look no further than Colorado’s famous Copper Mountain. This ski resort is less than three hours drive from Denver, Colorado, and one of the biggest ski areas in the state. The resort, developed in the late winter of 1972, is known for its seasonal activities. In the summer, golf and mountain bike racing are the sports of the day. In the winter, skiing and snowboarding activities take over.
As the ski and snow board mountain areas were developed and the number of runs increased and became more diverse, the surrounding resort town of Frisco gradually grew up around it. The bars and restaurants dotting the winter landscape are the perfect places to relax after a day on the mountain. And Copper Mountain is not shy about using the backdrop of the surrounding countryside as an enticement to bring in skiers.
But it’s not necessary to drive yourself to the neighboring communities to have fun, shop, buy womens snowboard, and so on. The mountain resort itself has restaurants and cafes to serve you as well. You can relax and watch as the skiers and snowboarders cascade down the mountain sides as you sip your hot cocoa and take in the majestic outdoor scenery through the large glass cafe window panes.
If you’ve been looking to learn to snowboard but putting it off because you’re waiting for the prices to come down, your wait may be over. With the discounts that resorts are offering today, this could be the best deal you’ve had in years.

Values in the Mountains

There is nothing like the summer time in the Rocky mountains. An area that is well known for the winter time activities is actually more appealing in the summer time. Activities such as hunting, golfing, hiking, biking, fishing, and shopping are enjoyed by millions of people each year. The ability to enjoy concerts, picnics, bbqs, etc… outside is just something you cannot do in the winter. The lack of humidity and bugs is also agreat releif for people coming from the midwest or east coast.
Golfing in Colorado is a great experience. Many courses are embedded in the mountains and offer views you will never get anywere else. Most likely you will also see spectacular mountain real estate and wildlife. Don’t be suprised either when your ball goes 10% – 15% farther due to the high altitude.
Hunting in Colorado is usually a fall activity however there are places in Colorado where the hunting is truly amazing. There are hunting ranches that allow you to rent the cabins and hunt the private property. Outfitters are also in abundance but charge quite a fee.
The fishing is also incredible for avid fisherman. You can expect to catch a variety of Rainbow, Brook, and Brown trout in the streams of the Rocky Mountains.
Shopping in Colorado is not too much different than anywhere else except when it comes the mountain real estate. Great real estate investments in Colorado are available these days. The prices have adjusted to a point where it makes great sense to get property that has a world class location.
Pine Beetles — the new scourge
May 28, 2009 by Dunkin · 6 Comments
We spent a week in Colorado the beginning of June. My family has had a cabin in Estes Park since 1932. My Dad’s father built it by hand when my Dad was just a couple of years old. This is on the east slope of the Rockies. There are trees starting to die on that side.
The real surprise was when we drove to the western slope. Entire square miles of forest are dead and brown. The pines have been killed by the Pine Beetle. The Pine Beetle is the most destructive forest pest in North America. The Canadian Forest Service describes the current pine beetle epidemic as the largest insect infestation in North American history.
Mountain Pine Beetles have a one year life cycle. In late summer (usually July-Aug in Rocky Mountain States) the newly hatched adults leave the tree of their metomorphosis, seeking out larger trees (usually over 13″ diameter if possible) in the surrounding area. (In areas with heavy infestation, beetle hatchlings may take even smaller trees as pressure to get ANY tree increases). When the adults arrive, they begin tunneling under the bark, lay eggs, which turn to larvae and live through the winter to produce more egg-laying adults to attack more trees. Colorado State University estimates that one infested tree will kill at least two or more trees. Thus the massive expansion occurs.
Beetles and almost all other animals communicate using pheromones. Verbenone – a synthetic pheromone treatment for high value pine trees – replicates the beetle pheromone, sending a message that the tree is full and that the food supply is insufficient for additional beetles. Arriving beetles receive the ‘message’ that they should look elsewhere for a suitable host. The easiest way to keep track of what is happening with your trees is with a properly placed nanny cam. Most cabins are not occupied throughout the entire year. But they are worth watching.
