Portable Air Conditioners or Central Air Conditioning?

October 4, 2009 by · 6 Comments

Even though these are tough economic times many of us try to maintain or improve our lifestyle while, at the same time, cutting costs. Central air conditioning units can be expensive to purchase, operate and maintain.

An often overlooked solution is a portable air conditioning unit. They are much less expensive and are a very versatile appliance to use in your home. After all, it is not economical to use a large amount of electricity in order to keep all rooms in the house air conditioned throughout the summer, when quite often some rooms are hardly used.

Portable air conditioning units can be moved into the kitchen at meal times, into the lounge when relaxing in the evening and moved into the bedroom at night. They are comforting low-maintenance home appliances that can serve the cooling needs of a room for many years at a relatively low price. They can easily be sored away when not in use.

Portable air conditioner units range from $100 to $1,500 with most of them in the range of $250-$600. Lower priced air conditioner units often have manual controls while higher priced units may include a dehumidifier or a heater. These units often come with a window bracket and exhaust hose for easy installation and venting of hot air to insure proper cooling. They save energy compared to a central air conditioner because you are able to target only the area you want cooled with a portable air conditioner.

It hould be noted that you will have to keep these units next to a window to allow the hot air to be vented to the outside. They have a special exhaust tube that is used which goes out of the window.

Portable air conditioners come with energy ratings on them that show how energy efficient they are. In order to save on electricity it is a good idea to go with units that have higher ratings. To find out more about Portable Air Conditioner Units visit Portable Air Conditioner reviews.

Heating Processes

Space Heating

Space heating is the heating of a space, usually enclosed, such as a house or room. A space heater keeps the air and surroundings at a comfortable temperature for people or animals, or even plants in a greenhouse. Space heating generally warms a small space, and is usually held in contrast with central heating, which warms many connected spaces at once. Space heating does not include water heating, unless it is used for hydronic heating.

Electric heating

Electric heating is any process in which electrical energy is converted to heat. Common applications include heating of buildings, cooking, and industrial processes .
An electric heater is an electrical appliance that converts electrical energy into heat. The heating element inside every electric heater is simply an electrical resistor, and works on the principle of Joule heating: an electric current through a resistor converts electrical energy into heat energy.
Alternatively, a heat pump uses an electric motor to drive a refrigeration cycle, drawing heat from a source such as the ground or outside air and directing it into the space to be warmed. Such systems can deliver two or three units of heating energy for every unit of electricity purchased.

Industrial electric heating

Advantages of electric heating methods over other forms include precision control of temperature and distribution of heat energy, combustion not used to develop heat, and the ability to attain temperatures not readily achievable with chemical combustion. Electric heat can be accurately applied at the precise point needed in a process, at high concentration of power per unit area or volume. Electric heating hire apparatus can be built in any required size and can be located anywhere within a plant. Electric heating processes are generally clean, quiet, and do not emit much byproduct heat to the surroundings. Electrical heating hire equipment has a high speed of response, lending it to rapid-cycling mass-production equipment.

Industrial Heating

Design of an industrial heating hire system starts with assessment of the temperature required, the amount of heat required, and the feasible modes of transferring heat energy. In addition to conduction, convection and radiation, electrical heating methods can use electric and magnetic fields to heat material.

Gas heaters

A gas heater is a device used to heat a room or outdoor area by burning natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas.

The first gas heater made use of the same principles of the Bunsen burner invented in the previous year. It was first commercialized by the English company Pettit and Smith in 1856. The flame heats the air locally. This heated air then spreads by convection, thus heating the whole room. Today the same principle applies with outdoor patio heaters or “mushroom heaters” which act as giant Bunsen burners.

Beginning in 1881 the burner’s flame was used to heat a structure made of asbestos, a design patented by Sigismund Leoni, a British engineer. Later, fire clay replaced the asbestos because it is easier to mould. Modern gas heaters still work this way although using other refractory material.

Modern gas heaters have been further developed to include units which utilize radiant heat technology, rather than the principles of the Bunsen burner. This form of technology does not spread via convection, but rather, is absorbed by people and objects in its path. This form of heating is particularly useful for outdoor heating, where it is uneconomical to attempt to heat a large volume of air.

Radiant heating

Radiant heating is a technology for heating indoor and outdoor areas. Radiant heating consists of “radiant energy” being emitted from a heat source. Radiant heating heats a building through radiant heat, rather than other conventional methods including convection heating. The technology has existed since the Roman use of Hypocaust heating. Underfloor radiant heating has long been widespread in China and Korea. The heat energy is emitted from a warm element (floor, wall, overhead panel) and warms people and other objects in rooms rather than directly heating the air. The internal air temperature for radiant heated buildings may be lower than for a conventionally heated building to achieve the same level of body comfort (when adjusted so the perceived temperature is actually the same).

So how often do you publicly use your website address? All the time? Not often enough? Only when you remember?

Your website address plays a big part in how you get found online, but it can help you offline as well. The trouble is that lots of people switch off their computers and go out and about and forget they still have a website. Why not promote it offline too?

There are plenty of ways – both straightforward and ingenious – in which you can promote your website or affiliate program and increase the flow of traffic in your direction, and a lot of those ways are free. The key to making the most of them is to put your website address everywhere you can and promote it heavily here, there and everywhere – whether you are online or off.

Here’s a good example of how often people leave money on the table and miss out on a simple promotional idea. I suspect most of us know there is a facility to put a signature at the end of all our outgoing emails. Why not use it to promote your website or blog network? No matter how many email accounts you have, put the same signature line on every single one.

You might be thinking it’s silly to promote your website on the emails that go out of your personal email account to your bank manager, your electricity company and your friends and family. But why shouldn’t you? They all surf the net and read emails don’t they? One of them might just become your best customer.

The same rule applies to those small address labels a lot of people use. Get your website address printed up on those as well. Who knows, the postman might see it and decide to take a look. As an online affliate this is one of the ways to stack the odds in your favor.

It also pays to keep a stack of business cards with you. Whenever the conversation turns to business, or the internet or any one of a hundred other subjects, you can mention your site and simply hand out a business card.

The point is that there are lots of deceptively simple ways to promote your website and let other people know it exists that don’t cost a penny, or any more than a few seconds of your time. But it’s precisely those reasons which lead many of us not to bother about doing it at all. It’s almost as if it’s not worth doing unless there is a big effort or sum of money involved.

In reality the very opposite is true. Lots of small efforts and business cards handed out over time, plus emails sent out with a simple promotional signature attached, can lead to bigger results than you might expect.

As always the key to success is persistence. It can also be trying to remember you are a website owner and the owner of a business at all times, even when you are relaxing and ‘off duty’, so to speak. Why pass up the chance to do a spot of free advertising when it comes your way?

All you need to do is recognise it.

Milfoil Weevil as a Barrier to Invasive Milfoil

August 14, 2009 by · 7 Comments

The Milfoil  weevil is a small water bug that could be able to rescue troubled ecosystems. This stems  from the fact that it only eats milfoil and is harmless to people).

In the United States., there are  two types of milfoil. One is indigenous and the other  invasive (Eurasian Milfoil). The indigenous species is not a trouble but the Eurasian one is a major environmental threat. The  milfoil weevil now enjoys great popularity thanks to its love for the Eurasian Milfoil.

Eurasian milfoil (the only one that will be referred to in the rest  of the article unless otherwise stated) probably found its way into the northern states  somewhere between 1800’s and the 1940’s as it clung to Boats or was tossed out as  packaging material. Because of its ability to travel on boat anchors,  bottoms, and propellers it spread widely, bringing with it drastic ecological shifts and  extra problems for people.   This is also a great way to spread  the milfoil weevil as well.

It propagates quickly and destroys ecosystems by clogging out the indigenous flora life which  reduces food for water fowl, contracts habitat for fry, and reducing fishing by beasts.  The large mats it forms cuts the oxygenation of water by wind that leads  to stressed fish and algae blooms.

The milfoil is more annoying for people than harmful because it can reduce  the amount of water available for yachting, angling, bathing and waterskiing.   Communities are more adversely affected  as the mats can foul intake and overflow pipes ensuing in flooding or droughts.   The mats can be particularly detrimental to dykes by breaking or clotting generators and  reducing electricity output.

The milfoil weevil may  well be the answer to this flora epidemic.   Eurasia milfoil is a favorite of the milfoil weevil rather than the  native kind; this results in the invasive species being step by step destroyed and native  plants slowly returning to their natural place. Coupled with a high reproduction rate, the  weevil is the safe and ideal answer to the milfoil problem. When taking into consideration how quick the milfoil spreads, it is obvious that weevils are the perfect answer to controlling the problem.

Milfoil spread when a small section is broken off, sinks to the bottom and then takes  root, forming a new growth. Marine  harvesting devices are not successful because they break the plant and pieces come off and  replant themselves elsewhere. Vacuum dredging works a little better because no broken bits are left behind, but at  the same time the vacuum disrupts the water and could leave no plant life at the bottom.

The milfoil weevil will  destroy the whole plant by digging into the stem and eating from the inside out, which  will kill the plant. With a short life span (milfoil weevils live about 30 days) at  least 3 generations will live and die till they head to the land to winter. Milfoil weevils  do have wings, but no one has ever seen them fly so no on knows precisely how the come ashore for the winter.   Once established in a habitat, the milfoil weevil will live even through the coldest Minnesota winters.

Modern technology brings out the best with Totoku and Eizo monitors

July 8, 2009 by · 6 Comments

Eizo is not a new player in big-size LCD display market. Today the firm updated it’s portfolio with a new 24-inch full HD monitor for colorblind people. Eizo is hoping to set a new benchmark for artists, video editors and other color-conscious computer users with the launch of the ColorEdge Quietly introduced at the PMA photo expo but named public today, the 30-inch Eizo Flexscan monitors is fashioned to be as true as possible to the color ranges that appear in most video: courtesy of twelve-bit color lookup and 16-bit color processing, the display gets one hundred percent of the NTSC gamut and ninety-seven percent of Adobe’s RGB color space, ensuring that a few if any colors will be mishandled even in photo editing. Eizo is renowned for its often specialized monitors. The company rejoins with 2 new FlexScan LCDs that anticipate to cover 95% of the Adobe RGB color space (and 92% of the NTSC colour gamut).

Totoku’s 22.2-inch CCL901 has a upper limit resolution of 3,840 x 2,400 at 24-bit color, which works out to about 9.2 mp and 200 dpi. The company says this single- or dual-DVI LCD has a native gamma of 1.8 and 500-Kelvin backlights, which we truly hope stands for something to Photoshop buffs out there. Their website states that the ME551i2 medical diagnostic monitor is capable of display 2048 shades of gray (per sub-pixel) with an integrated viewer. The ME551i2 has a 11.9-bit search table (LUT) that allows a pallet of 3826 shades of gray and can display 2048 shades with a specialised view and 256 shades without. Totoku displays are constituted of high luminance, high contrast ratios, exceptional viewing angles, and a long life backlight. All Totoku displays include a removable stand, and are fully height adaptable with a tilt-swivel base.

Liquid crystals are virtually exactly what they sound like: crystalline structures clad in a liquid. When electricity is run over a LCD array, the crystals either expand or contract, depending on the signal. Liquid crystals in 2mp act as a dynamic polarise agent. They change their orientation when you position a voltage across an LCD cell.

Debt Management Tips

June 17, 2009 by · 5 Comments

It’s often difficult to know where to turn when it comes to managing debts. Many people are unaware of the help that’s available, and many do not realise that their lenders may be willing to help out if money gets tight.

There are a number of things can do to help get yourself out of debt. Here are a few tips for making managing your debts easier.

Contact your lenders
If you are struggling to meet your debt repayments, you should always contact your lenders first. In some cases, your lender(s) may be willing to make a temporary agreement allowing you to make lower monthly payments, or even a payment holiday, in order to get your finances in order.

If you cannot agree anything suitable with your lenders, then it’s time to speak to a debt advice expert.

Get free debt advice
A good debt management company will offer free, confidential debt advice. In some cases, a little debt advice may be all that’s required.

A debt adviser will talk you through your situation to help you decide the best way forward for your circumstances. They’ll tell you if a simple reshuffle of your finances could help – or, if the situation is a little more serious, they’ll recommend an appropriate solution to help you pay off your debts.

Assess your own costs
Often, the best form of debt management is to look at your outgoings in detail and see where you might be able to cut back. Consider which costs are essential and which you could do without. Do you really need that satellite TV subscription if you’re struggling to pay your mortgage?

Also consider costs that you could make lower yourself, perhaps by switching provider. Gas, electricity and broadband, for example, are all provided by a wide range of companies, all of which are looking to compete with each other. Do your research, and you might be surprised at how much money you could save overall.

Budget with your money
Some people overspend simply because they haven’t planned their finances well enough. By budgeting properly, it’s easier to avoid unexpected costs and to ensure you have enough money for all your expenses.

At the start of the month, calculate exactly how much you are likely to need to spend by looking at previous months’ expenditure. Add up each part separately – your household bills, mortgage payments, food costs, debt repayments, etc. – and the remaining money is your disposable income.

By doing this, you know in advance when and where your money is leaving your account, and the disposable income provides a convenient safety net should anything unexpected arise, as well as covering your leisure costs.

The Real Reasons To Have A Hot Tub Cover

February 14, 2009 by · 4 Comments

A lot of people think that the only reason to buy a hot tube cover is to keep the water clean. However, you should realize that the cover actually does more than keep fallen dirt out of the water. Of course, it is an effective gadget in making sure that people soak in clean hot tub water, however, hygiene is not the only reason for buying a hot tub cover.

Here are some of the reasons why a cover is important whether you already own, plan to buy or even intend to learn how to build a hot tub:

Safety

One of the most underestimated functions is safety. A lot of people know how dangerous an open hot tub can be when you have children around the house. You can make sure that even if your toddler or child ventures near the tub, he or she will not fall into the water. You should make sure though that you actually secure the cover, not merely place it on top of the hot tub.

Energy Conservation

Another reason for buying is energy conservation. You should know that heating the water of the tub to the right temperature can consume a lot of electricity. Because of this, you need to make sure that the tub loses as little heat as possible. A quality cover will ensure that the next time you use the tub it won’t take a lot of electricity to get the water back to its right temperature.

There are also solar covers that can actually ease your electricity load. This is because these they actually utilize the energy of the sun to heat up and maintain the temperature of the water. Buying these solar covers can help you save up to 10 percent on your electricity bill. By today’s standards, that’s quite a lot.

There are some things you need to consider before buying. The first is the material of the cover. You should know that what the cover is made of greatly affects how effective it is in maintaining the temperature of the water. Although getting a canvas cover can cost you less, you really ought to think about buying one that’s made of Styrofoam. This material has better insulating properties than others and will help you save more on your electric bill.

You should also make sure that what you buy completely covers the hot tub so as not to let any heat escape. Of course, this could be easier with a canvas or plastic sheet cover, but you should really opt to having your hot tub fitted with better cover material.

As always, take the cost into consideration. You need to make sure that you are getting the most out of your money. Check if the quality of the product is well worth paying for.

When you think about it, having hot tub cover can really give you a lot of advantages. Just make sure that you choose the right one for your needs.
