Does it Matter Whether I Purchase a .com Extention for my Site?

October 18, 2009 by · 5 Comments

I’ve heard both sides of this debate from different marketers over the years, but predominately the answer most will give to that question is yes, it does make a difference. That for some reason, Google gives more “appreciation” to a .com or possibly a .org domain than to a .info (or even .net) domain.

The people that have told me this say that it is obvious to see this is true because when you look at the search results you get when you enter a phrase into a search engine, the page one sites are almost always going to be .com or .org.

Yes, this is usually accurate, but I have another side to that statement that you could think about when deciding which extension you choose to purchase.

There are thousands, hundreds of thousands more .com and .org sites on the Internet than there are .info. This fact on it’s own would explain why the search results generally have .com and .org domains in their page one listings. I am not saying that it is not a possibility that the search engines like .com or .org, I am just bringing up a point. That is that .com and .org domain extensions should be in the top of the search results most of the time, there are 10′s, even 100′s of thousands more websites with a .com or .org domain extension.

I myself have mostly .com domains. I like them because when people enter domain names into their address bar they tend to enter .com. So, by simply buying a .com you can make sure they go to your website. If the website you were looking for in a .com has a .info available and you purchase it, then when the person goes to type it into their address bar, it is likely that unless they were really attentive, they will be typing in .com. Therefore, instead of arriving at your website, they would go to someone else’s.

I do have a few .info extensions however and as far as a SEO stand point I have discovered that they rank in the search engines equally as well as a .com website. So, for search engine optimization reasons it doesn’t really seem to matter which extension you buy. The SEO techniques side comes down more to your keyword phrases and links than to the domain extension you choose.

Therefore, it comes down to what you prefer. Do you care ifthey unintentionally enter .com instead of .info (or even .net)? Your answer to this question will aid you in choosing which domain extension you purchase.

Search Engine Optimization As An Internet Marketing Strategy

February 16, 2009 by · 7 Comments

The World Wide Web or also known as the internet has opened up new and better opportunities for a lot of people and companies alike. Due to its invention, the internet has changed the ways we do a lot of things such as researching and communication among others. One of the major beneficiaries of the internet is business marketing.

In the past, marketing used three primary media to get their message across to the consumers. These media are known as print media, radio media and television media. Each has its own pros and cons but the best media is television. This title is being challenged by the internet as internet marketing is becoming more and more popular not only with website owners or online businessmen, but with other companies and businesses as well. They are starting to see the influence and efficiency of the internet as a marketing tool and thus are leaning towards developing new and better ways to get their message to the consumers by using the internet.

The internet has a few distinct advantages over the other forms of media. Besides having the advantages of all three, it is far cheaper to advertise in the internet. Another advantage is the fact that businesses and companies can easily target the consumers whom they want to hear their message; in other words they have the ability to choose where to place their advertisements so that most, if not all of their target market are able to see it. Last, the internet is a relatively new media and there’s still a chance of discovering new ways or techniques in using this as a marketing tool. However, whatever tool an internet marketer would use, the strategy he or she would incorporate should always include a website or web page and this must be designed to be properly optimized for search engines; this process is of course called search engine optimization.

Search engine optimization or simply known as SEO is the basic skill any internet marketer would need to know. SEO is the process of making sure that a website or web page would be easily accessible through search engines by using keyword niches. It may sound a bit complicated at first but it is an essential part of internet marketing. The whole strategy would be pointless if the consumers are able to find the website or web page of the business to fully capture their interest.

Placing web banners on different websites isn’t enough to complete an internet marketing strategy. These banners and links are used to get the attention of the consumer and in order to get them to purchase the product or use the service of the business, a website is important. To complete the internet marketing strategy, this website needs to be SEO so that it gets a higher rating in search engine results. SEO basically increases the traffic of the website and this is what internet marketing aims to do. Higher website traffic would eventually lead to better profits and revenues.
