Bariatric surgery is a gastric bypass surgery for weight reduction in severely obese people. Although this is usually a very effective procedure, it is best for the patient to make sure this procedure right for him or her.

Usually a person who qualifies for a gastric bypass surgery will be 100 pounds over his or her ideal weight, or has a BMI of 40 or over. A person with a BMI of 35 or over may qualify if that person has heart problems, sleep apnea, or diabetes. In addition, previous weight loss programs and exercising routines have to have proven to be unsuccessful. The patient also needs to be prepared for the after affects of surgery.

Before deciding whether or not you are an eligible candidate for bariatric surgery, your doctor will conduct a series of evaluations upon you. These evaluations could include blood test, EKG, chest x-ray, pulmonary function test, upper gastrointestinal x-ray, gall bladder, ultrasound, and/or a psychiatric evaluation.

If you have pre-existing conditions such as alcoholism, hepatic cirrhosis and impaired liver functions, serious psychiatric disability or correctable hormonal causes of obesity, you are usually disqualified from having this surgery. When these conditions are corrected, you may have a better chance of a doctor to be willing to operate on you.

There are three types of Bariatric (gastric bypass) surgeries. One of those is the Roux-en-Y Procedure in which the surgeon staples across the top portion of the stomach, creating a small stomach pouch. This new stomach pouch is then connected to the small intestine. This will help reduce the amount of food eaten, and reduce the absorption of calories eaten. If the person has gallstones, the surgeon can remove the gall bladder to prevent further formation of these stones.

The second type of Gastric Bypass surgery is the Laparoscopic surgery. In this type of surgery, the surgeon makes tiny incisions through the abdomen in which the patient is operated on with the use of a laparascope, which is a fiber optic tube which has a small camera on it. This small camera allows the insides of the person under the abdomen to be seen clearly during the procedure. Then, as in the first procedure, the doctor will sew the stomach shut to create a pouch. The third type of procedure used during gastric bypass surgery involves the use of a silicone band to create a small pouch using the top portion of the stomach. This helps reduce appetite while not interrupting the normal digestion process.

The above information will tell you if gastric bypass surgery is right for you. The following is some additional information you may need to know regarding your surgery, if you and your doctor agree to have this surgery performed on you.

Before admission to the hospital, your surgeon will send you to the lab for pre-operative test. In addition, you may be asked to stop smoking or drinking alcohol up to one month before the date of the surgery. Along with that, you could be told not to take aspirin or arthritis medications because they can slow blood clotting. Also recommended is for you to discuss blood donations options in case you need a blood transfusion. You may even have to donate your own blood two weeks in advance.

The result you get from your gastric bypass surgery depends on the type of surgical procedure you have done, and how committed you are to making the right lifestyle changes. For instance, if you just had a gastric bypass surgery, your chances of losing weight will depend upon whether or not you follow through with an exercise program and a diet plan. Age, sex, and initial weight before surgery can also have an effect on a person’s ability to lose weight after surgery.

Many patients lose from 50-90% of their excess body weight within 12-18 months after surgery. Even if they do not reach their ideal weight, they are less likely to continue suffering from heart trouble, diabetes, sleep apnea, arthritis, and back pain. The patient’s overall quality of life is dramatically changed.

If you are wondering if gastric bypass surgery is right for you, consult your physician and have him conduct the appropriate evaluation of your situation. He is sure to help you make the right decision.

Once you find out you are an ideal candidate for the gastric surgery, you are on your way to a higher quality of life. Not only that, but you will be healthier, too.

Our Family Vacation to Chicago

July 31, 2009 by · 2 Comments

Like so many other families that haven’t taken a holiday for a couple years, watching our cash because of the economy. My sister’s son and my only nephew asked his girlfriend to wed him and that is’s all it took! We found out the day the wedding was going to be held, my husband and I both had paid vacation time coming from work so we made a decision to go to the wedding and make it a holiday as well. So when it came time we packed out bags, loaded everything up and hit the road.

This was no short trip. It was close to 1200 miles back to my home city in Illinois so there was lots of time spent on the road. Sadly not all of our problems got left behind at home. After several hours of sitting and driving the 1st day I had began sensed some lower abdominal discomfort. Being perfectly truthful I believed it was a combination of being anxious, excitement and maybe just sitting for too much time. But by the end of our first day the discomfort had become worse. When we stopped for the evening I attempted to relax and stretch out some, hoping that it would improve, but there was no change. It got so bad I though we might have to go to a nearest emergency room. I decided to try to get a good nights sleep and make the decision in the morning. Before going to bed I called my mother to inform her where we had stopped and what was happening with me. After describing the symptoms I was having and Mom told me she had the very same symptoms when she was having problems with ovarian cysts. She additionally told me about some of the different treatment of ovarian cysts and how this one natural cure worked best for her. So I decided to go to the emergency room that night, simply to make sure what was taking place.

I’m certain each and every one of you have experienced visiting the emergency room at one point during your life or another. Well, the one we went to was phenomenally stuffed. Let me tell you, pain or no discomfort, sitting in a room full of sick and wounded folks wasn’t a superb atmosphere. The combination of all these elements actually pushed my anxiety. As time went by with folks coming out and in consistently, waiting to be seen while experiencing a great amount of discomfort it was finally enough and I began experiencing a panic attack. All I wanted to do was get out of there, agony or no discomfort. I have to admit, if it wasn’t for the help my hubby had given me, in addition to the skills I had learned about overcoming panic attacks I honestly believe I would have walked out. Eight hours later I left feeling a little better so far as the pain. The anxiety and panic had gotten better and the ultrasound confirmed I had an ovarian cyst. There was no cause for alarm though I recieved a prescription for pain if required, some guidelines on stuff to keep clear of and told to check in with my family doctor when we got back home.

We made it to Chicago and over the following days the discomfort decreased. I continued experiencing a little anxiety, but it was more anticipation about what precisely was going on. In fact one night we all gathered together and went out to eat at one of our favorite cafes. This is the type of food you simply cannot pick up in the south where we live, so we all did quite a bit over eating during that evening. My husband went slightly more overboard then he should have. I could tell as he mentioned that he required one of his remedies for heartburn before we even even made it back to our room. We laughed at it, but the rest of the night he was in not feeling very well because of his acid reflux and heartburn.

All in all it definitely was a excellent time. The wedding was beautiful and went smoothly without any problems. It had been a event to recollect. Essentially the entire vacation was something to recollect. Eventhough it started off a little rocky but the time was spent well surrounded by family and old friends that we hadn’t visited with in years. That most likely was one of the finest vacations the my family and I took in a long time.
